Background

The Association for Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care (ACTACC) represents professionals working across the UK in cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia. Alongside promoting high standards of care, ACTACC supports research, training and international collaboration. The association also runs an annual conference and plays an active role in professional development and policy. They required a new website to improve services for members and committees, and to streamline administrative processes. Following a recommendation, ACTACC chose 101 Websites & Apps for the project.

The Brief

ACTACC needed a modern, informative new website that was easier to update and supported the day-to-day needs of members and committee representatives.

ACTACC wanted to simplify administration and member communications with a straightforward online system to handle membership applications and payments, providing quick access for new members.

The website had to be easy for the team to update and they needed a professional mass email system to streamline communications. Ongoing agency support was also required to provide responsive assistance.

In addition to streamlining the joining process, ACTACC aimed to enhance the member experience by providing fast access to professional resources.

This includes best practice sharing, job vacancies, events, training, news, link persons, awards, grants and conference information, helping members stay informed and engaged.

ACTACC needed a way to offer exclusive access to certain parts of the website for committee members, enabling them to easily find relevant documents such as agendas, minutes, newsletters and meeting information.

This approach would help keep sensitive information secure while making it simple for each group to access what they need.

Our Solutions

We created a fully featured website tailored to ACTACC’s needs, combining membership tools, event support and clear communication in one easy-to-manage platform. We provided comprehensive training to enable the ACTACC team to keep their content updated. Here are some of the solutions we put in place:

A new online membership joining form, paired with online payment processing, makes sign-up fast and efficient. Members are automatically sent a welcome email containing information about membership benefits, helping to engage them immediately. This streamlined process gives members a smooth, user-friendly experience, while providing ACTACC’s administrator with quick access to manage member information. 

To promote best practice, we designed an interactive noticeboard where members can share information and ask questions. They can also post opportunities such as job vacancies or research projects, encouraging community collaboration and peer support.

To increase awareness of events and training, we built an easy-to-use calendar, searchable by interest, that lists upcoming meetings, study days and conferences at local, regional and international levels.

The website now features a user-friendly Fellowships Portfolio that lists cardiothoracic fellowships available across the UK. This resource supports members’ professional development by providing clear, accessible information on training opportunities, helping individuals explore and plan their career paths.

In addition, the new site includes a comprehensive Centres Directory that helps members connect with colleagues at cardiothoracic units throughout the UK. This directory encourages networking and collaboration within the profession, enabling members to share expertise and build relationships across different hospitals and regions.

ACTACC can now assign role-based access to members of their various committees, giving each member permission to view content relevant to their role. This allows the association to control access to sensitive documents such as minutes, agendas and meeting information, while committee members benefit from quick, easy access to important materials, which are just a few clicks away whenever they need them.


ACTACC now uses 101’s Smart Messenger email platform to enhance member communications with personalised, timely updates. From welcome packs for new members to event information, training updates and newsletters, the platform helps ACTACC stay connected and ensures members receive the support and information they need throughout the year. The system is fully supported, with phone assistance available for any ACTACC admin queries.
